PMU tips(35)--The Relationship Between Stroke Length and Needle Length and Find the Right Needle Hang Without Knowing Stroke Length

1. The Relationship Between Stroke Length and Needle Length

How far you let your needle hang out depends on the stroke length of your machine.

Remember this simple rule:

Ideally, your needle hang ≈ 1/2 of your machine’s stroke length.

If your stroke length is 3 mm and your needle hang is 2 mm

→ the needle will be “too dry”, your pixels will be inconsistent, and the work will look patchy and broken.

If your stroke length is 3 mm and your needle hang is only 1 mm

→ the needle will be “too wet”, the pigment will flood and spread, and your mapping will be completely blurred out.

2. A Way to Find the Right Needle Hang Without Knowing Stroke Length

* Start with a needle hang of around 2.5 mm.

* If the pigment isn’t flowing / isn’t implanting well → twist the needle in a little.

* If you’re getting lots of pooling, flooding, or heavy saturation → twist the needle out a little.

By watching whether your pixels are even and consistent, you can find the needle hang that works best for your setup.
